It's Friday the 13th...are you superstitious? Have you ever avoided doing something on that date? Does breaking a mirror really bring seven years' bad luck, and when you spill salt, why throw a pinch over your left shoulder? In this episode, I discussed superstitions with my listeners via the chat room and call-ins. This was actually the first time in nearly five years of hosting Through the Keyhole that I ever "flew solo," talking on my own for the full two hours rather than interviewing a guest. I had the privilege of meeting Lloyd several years ago at the International UFO Congress in Laughlin, NV and was immediately captivated by his presentation on the strange skull that had been found in a cave in Mexico. It was misshapen in a way that made it appear almost inhuman, and under the microscope it became even more strange. The presence of bone cells proved that it was a real skull, but their structure was puzzling, unlike any that had ever been seen before. Is it the skull of an alien being? Lloyd has spent years studying it and working to get DNA analysis done, no easy task (and not cheap, either!) Tonight, he'll share his exciting new test results with us. The popular television series, Supernatural, has taken off like a bat out of hell. Part of its appeal is that it's not all fiction -- many of the monsters and legends discovered by brothers Sam and Dean Winchester come from ancient traditions around the world. Thirteen-year-old Kat lives with her mom, a professional psychic, in a rambling, shabby house. Poor Kat deals every day with the acute embarrassment caused by her mom's hippie clothes and weird ways. Imagine her shock when, immediately following her thirteenth birthday, she finds that she can somehow, suddenly see ghosts herself. Kimmel has written an engaging series about warm, sympathetic people -- and she really seems to know her way around spirits, as well. This doesn't read like your average ghost story, but displays an easy familiarity with the subject that will resonate with anyone who has seriously studied the paranormal. It's a breath of fresh air after some of the books and movies that have come out over the years. It's also nice to see good information being made available to younger readers, in an age when many seem to be wondering about the future of the research field.

Head of the Illinois MUFON group, Sam Maranto has spent years researching UFOs and collecting reports of sightings in that area. He is an expert in the Chicago O'Hare and Tinley Park cases, and has also researched medieval UFO sightings and how they compare with modern triangle sightings in the American midwest. Tonight we'll discuss all of these topics as well as Jacques Vallee's latest book. I have to add, after the fact, that I was surprised to discover Sam's extensive interest in paranormal investigation as well as in UFOs -- and his account of his own sighting of Chicago's famous ghost, Resurrection Mary, was riveting!

In late December 1980, dozens of US Air Force personnel witnessed a landed UFO in the Rendlesham Forest in England, just outside of RAF Woodbridge. Various events were witnessed over a two- or three-day period. Some ufologists believe it is perhaps the most famous UFO event to have happened in Britain, ranking amongst the best-known UFO events worldwide. It has been compared to the Roswell UFO incident in the United States, and is sometimes referred to as "Britain's Roswell". Peter worked with Larry Warren, one of the witnesses, to write up a complete account of those events. Their work was published under the name, "Left at East Gate," which refers to how the group of men reached the UFO landing site from their base. Now thirty years after the events, major participants recently gathered in England to review and discuss their recollections of the case, and Peter was there. He'll tell us all about it tonight. Intrigued by his findings of approximately 750 cases spanning a period of less than fifty years in this very limited geographical area, Carl was further struck by the number of UFOs which were seen entering or leaving water -- a feat which he knows to be impossible for conventional aircraft. He now runs WaterUFO.net, a website which collects and organizes information on water-related UFO cases, and has just completed his first book on the subject, titled UFOs and Water.

Most of us watched the NBC program, "The Event," last week. May 24, 2008 Rich and I have just returned from a trip across the country! We headed out west with the kids to visit McMinnville, OR for their annual UFO Festival. Wow, what a lot of fun! I finally got to meet Regan Lee and her wonderful husband, Jim, in person. They are both such nice people, and while I knew that Regan is a talented writer from reading her many blogs, I discovered that Jim is also a very accomplished artist. We tried to persuade them to put some of his paintings on a website, so hopefully you'll be able to see them soon as well. Tim Hills, official historian for McMenamins (sponsor of the UFO Festival) was also wonderful, as was everyone else we met in Oregon. What a breathtakingly beautiful place! (I'm hoping to get Tim on the show soon to talk about his involvement as a source for a book on hauntings in Oregon. Watch here for details!) Then we flew from Portland
to Los Angeles to spend a few
days with the MUFON groups in

One was delivered by career investigator James Clarkson concerning June Crain, a woman who worked in a secure area in the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. John Keel passed away this week at age 79 after a long illness. He was probably best known for his 1975 book, The Mothman Prophecies, which was later made into a film starring Richard Gere. The book detailed Keel's experiences while researching creatures sightings in Point Pleasant, WV, in the mid-sixties, a case which culminated in the disastrous collapse of the Silver Bridge over the Ohio River and the deaths of many members of the small Point Pleasant community. In response to requests from my listeners, but also because it was something I wanted myself as well, I invited Mr. Keel to interview with me on Through the Keyhole. Unfortunately, toward the end of his life he did not give many interviews at all, and I was never able to arrange it. This week I'd like to talk about this unique man and his even more unique work in his fields of research, which encompassed stage magic, UFOs, paranormal activity, and cryptozoology as well. He was a friend of the late Ivan Sanderson, who is also well known for his matter-of-fact approach to researching such outre subjects, and both men were renowned for their unusual yet logical theories concerning the phenomena they studied.

Guest: Mark Nesbitt, author of several books on the hauntings at the Gettysburg battlefield One of the bloodiest and most decisive battles of the Civil War was fought at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Mark Nesbitt worked for the National Park Service as a Ranger/Historian in Gettysburg, PA for five years and then became a Licensed Battlefield Guide. I had the pleasure of attending Giorgio's presentation at the Culture of Contact Conference last month, and it was breathtaking. Giorgio has been called the modern Indiana Jones, and not without reason. He has actually traveled all over the world, and in his lectures he shows photographs that he has taken of all those famous archeological sites that we've all heard of. These are my comments, not Steve's. We discussed this during the show on Oct. 3 and he agreed with the idea, though he did not want to advocate any violent behaviour, as might be inferred by my promotion of what is admittedly a very violent film. I maintain that while we don't need to blow up any buildings, we should take to heart the message of the film, which is that we need to stand up, stand together, and take back control of our country. Writing these letters is one way to do that.

Some controversial subjects were raised, such as the role of religious belief in preventing or stopping an alien abduction, and also the imminence (or not) of full disclosure by the government of all they've been keeping from us concerning UFOs over the past sixty years or so. Colleen Clements is a brilliant scholar who
has been persecuted for her groundbreaking work in ancient culture.
For two decades, Clements taught philosophy at the Rochester
Institute of Technology. In 2006, she published her latest work,
The Order of the Dragon, a bold re-interpretation of the origins
of human civilization. Unfortunately for her, the book angered
conservative Christian elements within her university, and the next
thing she knew, she had been fired.
Arguing that we should take ancient writers at their word, Clements suggests that early humans were "not alone" in the creation of our civilization. While the theme reminds one of Zecharia Sitchin, Clements approaches her topic differently, working from academic and scientific sources to create possibly the first true history of the culture that created modern civilization. This she calls the Dragon Culture, which thrived prior to 35,000 BC in northern Eurasia. She then traces that culture through the ages, through Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Balkans, Languedoc, the Freemasons, and into the present. Order of the Dragon is a fascinating study that deserves our attention, as does the unconscionable treatment of a true scholar by a hidebound academic establishment.
